HUMMINGBIRD NECTAR RECIPE

We love hummingbirds and love to watch them allround the day, in particular after a long day, relaxing in our backyard nature retreat.

We have 4 feeders that are strategically located allround our gardens. The red, hummingbird nectar feeders ( red attracts hummingbirds) are placed in areas that are naturally specified “territories” ( as you know, hummingbirds are very territorial) which helps cut down on the fighting.

Our recipe is derived from the old ordinary recipe, but please be conscious that a lot of exploration has gone into making sure that we are supplying the most beneficial source of hummingbird feed replacement.

Our recipe starts with cane sugar. As you know, there are two roots of sugar: cane sugar and beet sugar, of which 70% of the world’s supply comes from cane sugar. Both are chemically “sucrose” and fall into the carbohydrate family. Carbohydrates are effortlessly digested and provide the prompt “energy boost” that hummingbirds need to

sustain their fantastically high metabolism. (Comment: I guess if we persons had that kind of metamorphosis we wouldn’t be facing our obesity crisis! Wow…what a conception …more exercise

…increased metabolic rate …burn more calories …less fat).

Sorry! Back to the topic…the second constituent our hummingbird feed recipe is water. Ever thought regarding the type of water you use for your hummingbird food? We have. The hummingbird’s source water comes from the naturally occurring water origins available: dew, rain water and deposits of rain water, persons provided (bird baths), and ultimately that provided in the hummingbird’s diet.

We use our tap water which is supplied from our well. The water’s chemical composition is in general hard ( holds calcium and magnesium) but has a TDS ( Total Dissolved Solids)

of 275 ppm with no measurable concentrations of lead or arsenic. Its safe for us to drink so the hummers get the gains of a good deal of added minerals. We feel it is better than using

distilled or purified water in our hummingbird recipe.

Now, if you’re a city dweller, you may have chlorine or flouride added to your water. I’d commend boiling that water to flash off the chlorine or flouride, 5 minutes of

boiling will have to be sufficient.

Next ingredient ….RED COLORING….No way!

Lets look at it from a hummingbird’s perspective. They like red and are attracted to the color due to genetics and environmental stimuli … flowers. If your hummingbird feeder is

red… why do you need more?

Naturally occurring nectar is clear and odorless ( Hummingbirds are not attracted by scent). So why buy these colored or scented mixes?

The red coloring (Red #40) has been banned in countries due to it is mutagenic properties ( may cause cancer). Why would you want to introduce chemicals into the hummingbird’s diet that are alien to their digestive system?

Several experienced, licensed wildlife rehabilitators have reported seeing disturbing harm in hummers that were known to use dyed syrup, including tumors of the bill and liver.

Here is our researched hummingbird feed recipe:

1 share cane sugar/ 4 constituents water ( no chlorine or fluoride)

Measure and add sugar, at the rate of 1/4 cup of sugar to 1 cup of water. Let cool and store excess in refrigerator until

ready to use.

Fill one-third of the container and be sure to change the mixture twice a week. You will need to clean your feeder each few days, with hot water and a mild (10%) bleach solution

to inhibit bacteria/mold. Rinse exhaustively before refilling with water syrup.

1Color Won’t Last
By Amazro
Beautiful when new. Real copper bottom, and very easy to clean. However I thought it was red glass. It’s clear glass, covered by red cellophane which starts peeling off soon after purchase. I’m going to attempt to get my money back.

2It is not “ruby red colored glass,” it’s clear, with ruby red paint- that easily flakes.
By N. Nash
I would have been 100% satisfied had the glass actually been red. It’s clear glass with red paint, and the two I own started to flake within a month. Isn’t it common knowledge that paint does not stick to glass well?? Why would you make a product like this? I’ve had mine for 8 months and I’m left with blotchy feeders that I paid over $30 for, thanks Schrody…

I do have a couple positives things to say about the feeder. I like the capacity and the copper plate on the base. The capacity is small, but I like that because it helps me keep the food fresh. I love that the plate is actually copper, and not plated or coated with anything, so it actually changes color instead of rusting like so many other feeders on the market do. If they were to fix the problem with the painted bottle, they would have a good product worth the price. Until then, I would not recommend this to my friends.

2Not worth the price.
By Gaba Hey
Since I was paying about 3 times the price of a regular feeder, I thought it would be of superior quality. Not really. The glass isn’t stained. It’s a cheap red coating which will peal off after about 3 washings. Nice looking — for about a week.
